Inkmaster tattoo artist Scott Marshall dies 41

Written By Maureen O'Donnell

To tattoo fans, Scott Marshall was the F-bombingly cocky winner of Season 4 of Spike TV’s “Ink Master.”
But his wife said she and his children remember the Glendale Heights native as a loving father and husband.

“He knew how to make each one of those kids just shine,” Johanna Marshall said. “This man was such a beautiful soul. I knew I could feel the love — not just him saying he loved me.”

She was notified of his death Sunday night, at a Roselle hotel, by police in the west suburb. He worked at Roselle Tattoo Company. On Saturday, he’d told her he wasn’t feeling well, so she told him to stay at a hotel rather than drive the 40 miles to their home in a far southwest suburb.
“He just went to sleep and didn’t wake up,” said Johanna Marshall, who was married to him for 11 years.
“It was heart failure,” said his brother, Christopher. “We never knew about it.”
He didn’t engage in risky or unhealthy habits, Johanna Marshall said. “It was very unexpected. A very unexpected loss.”

The DuPage County coroner’s office was awaiting autopsy results.
Mr. Marshall, 41, grew up in Glendale Heights. His artistic talent showed by the time he went to Glenside Middle School, his brother said.
“He did an art competition for a plumbing company looking for a logo, fifth or sixth grade, and won second place,” Christopher Marshall said.
Mr. Marshall went to Glenbard North High School, where he hung out with the  headbangers.
“We had some pretty bad hairstyles,” his brother said.
Young Scott Marshall played in a band called Spacebug Thugs.
“He was a great drummer,” his brother said. “If it wasn’t for the tattooing, he could have easily been a professional musician. Scott would make the backdrop, airbrush everything and create the posters for the shows.”
They liked to ride their bikes and hang out at Tommy’s Red Hots in “the Heights.”
He loved old-school metal such as Metallica, Motorhead and Pantera. They went to see the band Rush so often they lost count, his brother said. Lately, he liked a Maryland band, Clutch.

In 1998, he graduated from Chicago’s American Academy of Art. A year later, he got his first tattoo. “Once he realized he could do it and was good at it, it just came alive from then on,” Christopher Marshall said.
Scott Marshall met his future wife when she came in to Roselle Tattoo for a design she said she treasures.
“He’s just a very good-looking guy, and we started talking and laughed,” Johanna Marshall said.
She told him she wanted a sword going through a rose, and he inked one on her leg.

Gallipolis tattoo shop offers free services to cancer survivors

Envy Ink in Gallipolis is showing its support for cancer survivors by offering free nipple reconstruction, eyebrow and cancer-related scar cover-up tattoos at no charge.

GALLIPOLIS — Through the end of 2015, a local tattoo shop is showing its support for cancer survivors by offering free nipple reconstruction, eyebrow and cancer-related scar cover-up tattoos, at no charge.
Envy Ink owner Joshua LaBello said these types of services, historically performed by doctors or nurses, are relatively new to the tattoo industry.

“It makes sense that people with an art background should start taking this on,” LaBello said. “We’re getting to a place in society now where tattoos and tattoo shops, and the culture, are more accepted and more integrated. So, it’s not so crazy to walk into a tattoo shop to get your eyebrows done.”
Scar cover-up is not a new service at Envy Ink. LaBello first started because he saw it as a challenge and has since covered everything, from self-harm scars to burn scars, with artwork. This type of cosmetic work performed by tattoo artists, LaBello said, has helped push tattooing into the mainstream.
When it comes to tattooing nipples or breast scars, LaBello said he has seen a variety of people who can benefit from tattooing.

“Some people have the breast reconstruction with no nipple and we can completely paint it on with tattooing. Some people have the nipple reconstructed from skin pulled from elsewhere, and we’re basically just coloring it in to be more natural,” LaBello said. “Some people have a very slight scar and others have a very, very thick scar. There are other options for tattooing other than just creating a nipple. Sometimes it’s still not covering enough, if it’s just a nipple over the scar. So we can do, depending on what they want, floral tattoos or some other design to cover up the scar in a way that accents the body.”
Already specializing in bad tattoo cover-ups, LaBello’s reasoning behind tackling scar cover-ups was the challenge and he has personally witnessed, over the years, the positive effect his work has had on his customers.

“It’s always been very gratifying to cover a tattoo that was preventing someone from reaching their potential in some way, such as simply wearing a bathing suit or landing a job they wanted,” he said. “Scars are just a higher level of that because there’s sometimes a lot of emotional scarring, as well as physical, tied up in it.”
LaBello’s history in tattooing started with a love of art. After dabbling in other art-related fields, such as comic book illustration, LaBello attempted tattooing and decided it was the route he wanted to go. With a portfolio of his artwork in hand, LaBello found a tattoo shop willing to teach him. Eventually, he not only learned how to tattoo, but took over the shop.
“That’s how I came to own Envy Ink,” LaBello said.
And Envy Ink is a family affair. LaBello’s brother, Michael, is also a tattoo artist at the shop.
“We’ve been competing against each other as artists since he was born,” Joshua said.

Michael’s specialty is creating original designs for customers.
“We’re both always experimenting and dabbling in other styles,” Joshua said. “We’re constantly learning and we love our job. Most tattoo artists have one style. We really fear no style. Experimenting with styles makes us much more well-rounded artists.”

The LaBello brothers recently welcomed artist Gerry Enrico to the team. Enrico, an award-winning, world-traveled artist is finishing up his apprenticeship at Envy Ink to add tattoo artistry to his already impressive artist resume.
“He brings a lot to the company and we’re really happy to have him,” Joshua said. “I don’t want to hire people who are just in this for their infatuation with the tattoo culture. I want to recruit true artists and then teach them how to apply beautiful art to skin.”

The shop also stands out from others for utilizing a topical numbing procedure when tattooing.
“It’s not about someone being a sissy,” Joshua said. “If they sit still for us, we can get it done in fewer sessions. We can get stronger, straighter lines for them. It’s just all-around good for everyone.”
In addition to their tattooing services, Envy Ink also sells a special line of shirts and hoodies, and regularly holds live comedy and music events.
Envy Ink is one of the newest members of the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce.

Couple aim to break tattoo world record in memory of son who died of cancer aged just two

Mark and Lisa Richmond, who helped pioneer the art 'cremation tattoos' where ink is mixed with ashes, hope to create more than 826 tattoos in a day

The record attempt, in memory of Ayden Richmond (pictured), will take place at GOI Tattoos in Cardiff

A couple are attempting a world record for the most tattoos done in 24 hours to raise money for a children’s hospice that cared for their son in his final days.
Lisa Richmond and her husband Mark, from Tongwynlais , Cardiff , are hosting the world record attempt at their tattoo studio GOI in Llandaff North . Their son Ayden died from a rare form of children’s cancer at 29 months old in 2005.

He spent his last few days at the Acorns Children’s Hospice, which offers a network of care and support to life-limited and life-threatened children and their families.
The couple have now decided to raise money for the hospice by holding a tattoo marathon and attempting to beat the Guinness World Record for the most tattoos done by one artist in 24 hours.

Aiming for more than 826 tattoos

The current record is held by an artist in America who completed 826 tattoos in a single day in 2013.
They plan to split the money they raise between the Acorns Children’s Hospice and Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff after also recently discovering that Mark’s mother has cancer.

Lisa said: “We really want to break this record and raise money at the same time so the more support we get from the public on the day the better.
“The money we raise will go towards two charities which are very close to our hearts. My mother-in-law has cancer so some of it will go to Velindre.
“She has two tumours in her colon which have spread to her lymph nodes so she will be using the Velindre hospital a lot in the coming months.
“The other half of the money will go to the Acorns Children’s Hospice who cared for my boy before he passed away."

Cremation tattoo

She explained: “Ayden had a really rare form of children’s cancer and had a lot of things wrong with him.
“It was so rare that the doctors didn’t even have a name for it. But he couldn’t speak, hear or see, so we couldn’t even hear him say Mam or Dad.”

After Ayden died, Mark come up with the idea of tattooing his ashes onto Lisa’s body. This made GOI Tattoo Studio the first in the UK to do ‘cremation tattoos’, where the ashes of loved ones are mixed with tattoo ink.
These tattoos have attracted a host of celebrity customers including Wayne Rooney, Kerry Katona, boxing champion Micheal Jennings, actor Stephen Graham and his actress wife Hannah Walters, and singer Daniel De Bourg – also known as DDB.
“The cremation tattoos have become really popular,” said Lisa.
“People have even had their pets ashes tattooed onto them, likes dogs and rabbits.
“It means a lot to people and a lot of people cry when they see them.”
24-hour marathon
The 24-hour marathon will start at midday on Saturday, October 31, and run until midday on Sunday, November 1.
“It will literally be going for 24 hours. We won’t be closing, having breaks or sleeping. The cafe next door is also staying open as long it can to serve people food and hot drinks,” Lisa said.

Tattoos will start from a minimum donation of £20 up to £40 and designs will include cancer ribbons, doves, hearts, quotes and Halloween tattoos.

They will also be holding a raffle with a top prize of £500 and an auction, where bids can be placed on their Facebook page to win a full sleeve tattoo worth £1,115.
