WICHITA, Kan. -

Matt German has served his country as a Marine both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now he wants to join again to become an officer, but his tattoos are now a problem.

"My first thought was why does it matter," says German.
It's part of tougher standards implemented this year by branches of the military leaving people like German no choice.

He's going through the long and sometimes costly process of having them removed.
"It's an exhausting exercise to go through to service your country," says German.

You will find German and others wanting to join the military at Wichita's Original Skin. It currently has five clients having tattoos removed so they can join the military.

"I love being part of that process and help people achieve their dreams," says laser Joe Ellen Parson.

Adrianna Walker hopes to join the Air Force.

"I've been talking to a recruiter but I can't do anything until the tattoos are gone," says Walker.
Removal can take 10 sessions or more.  The average removal cost about $1,000 but there are packages and discounts for military and police recruits.
