The Dad with the Butterfly Tattoo!!

My son Jackson was born with Down syndrome.

He's been an unbelievable blessing to everyone whose life he touches, and he has taught me more about life than any other person on the planet.
However, when he was first diagnosed, I did not see it as a blessing... far from it.

But I soon realized that I couldn't let it control my life... and that I could not only handle it, but additionally use it to improve my life and happiness.

My understanding of this concept helped me move from a state of despair to a state where I loved and appreciated the thing I once saw as an unbeatable problem.
So, I did what any rational person would do.

I got a tattoo.

I wanted it to be special and communicate my journey with Jackson. The tattoo tells the story of our journey through the chrysalis of a butterfly (the butterfly is also the international symbol for Down syndrome).
Stage 1: Despair
2015-01-29-cocoon.jpg
This stage is like being wrapped up in a cocoon, wanting to live in total isolation and darkness. Dissociating from the rest of the world completely and preparing yourself for the upcoming changes.

This can range from the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage, being fired from your job, a collapse of a business... or in my case, finding out my newborn son had Down syndrome.

"Despair" is the first stage you go through after being dealt a problem that you can't fix. You will want to hide from the world, and often feel that you are the only person that this has happened to... EVER.
Being miserable at this point is totally normal, and actually means you have a healthy spirit and mind.
When I was dealing with the news about Jackson, I was at the lowest point in my life... by a mile. We're talking fetal position on the floor sobbing uncontrollably. Drinking very heavily every night just to be able to fall asleep. I cried for the thought of what he would have to go through later in life, for the loss of my "perfect" son I had always dreamed about, for my wife losing her "happy every after." Then on top of all that, there was unbearable guilt for feeling anything but joy over this beautiful and amazing soul that was just brought into the world.
But the "Despair" stage passes, and you move on into...

Stage 2: Acceptance
2015-01-29-acceptance.jpg
At this stage, you have accepted the "problem" and are starting to emerge like a butterfly from the cocoon.
You are still not free yet, but you start to reenter the world again. But because you aren't done, you still have to work at clawing your way out of the cocoon.
This would be where you come to terms with the death of a loved one or the end of a marriage, start to build a new business to replace the one you lost, start interviewing for a new job... in my case, simply process that your child will be a little different than what you had initially planned for.
You see, I was able to accept that he had Down syndrome, but I still wasn't where I wanted to be.
So, I joined the Board of Directors for Houston's Down Syndrome Association, wrote about Jackson in my second book, blogged about my experiences with him, reached out to the IM community and raised a lot of money for a DS Charity, and much more.
I had accepted Jackson's diagnosis, and was ready to take it head on and make it work for me and my family.
The "acceptance" phase is where the hard work takes place. If you don't put in the work during this phase, you won't make it to the next phase... Appreciation.
Stage 3: Appreciation
2015-01-29-appriciation.jpg
At this stage, you've moved past the "problem" and see that it was really a blessing from God all along, and far more beautiful that anything you ever imagined... just like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon.
This would be where you are at peace with the death of a loved one and feel nothing but joy because of the time you had with them, start to date again and feel blessed for the person you grew into during the ending of your marriage. You actually cherish the failing of your business or job loss because of what you learned from it
In my case, I now really see the beauty in Down syndrome. The almond eyes, rounder face, protruding tongue, etc.
I have evolved to a place where I see it completely different than I did before Jackson... and not just with DS anymore, either. It has transformed how I see ALL people.

You may have also noticed a Bible verse on a scroll underneath the butterfly... Jeremiah 1:5.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart."
This means that Jackson is not a mistake... no human beings are less than any other. They all have a place in the world and something special that sets them apart.

Every person on this planet was at one point a baby being held by someone who loved them as much as I loved my son. He has taught me more deeply than I ever thought possible that all life is precious... every person should be loved and valued.

Summary
Things that seem ugly and are totally out of your control will only be that way long-term if you allow them to be. Challenges are what make your life unique, and they are your main opportunity to distinguish your life from everyone else's.

Body Art: Otzi the 5,300-Year-Old Mummified Iceman Had 61 Tattoos!!

Four thin, black lines, stacked on top of each other, bring the total number of tattoos on Ötzi, a 5,300-year-old mummified iceman, to 61, according to an exhaustive new study.

Finding the new body art, located on the lower side of Ötzi's right ribcage, "was a big surprise because we didn't expect to see a new tattoo," said Albert Zink, the study's senior researcher and head of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman at the European Research Academy in Italy.

Ötzi's tattoos are no secret: Even the hikers who discovered him in the Italian Alps in 1991 noticed he had markings on his skin. But researchers have disagreed about the number of tattoos on Ötzi's body for years, and "we decided it would be important to have a clear number of the tattoos" going forward, Zink told Live Science. [Mummy Melodrama: Top 9 Secrets About Otzi the Iceman

The 61 lines that make up the tattoos on Ötzi, a 5,300-year-old iceman found in the Italian Alps in 1991.

To investigate, the researchers used technologies developed for the art world: a camera with specialized lenses that can determine whether an artist painted over another painting on the same canvas. The various lenses can capture different wavelengths of light, ranging from ultraviolet light at 300 nanometers (billionths of a meter) to infrared light at 1,000 nm. (Visible light extends from about 400 nm to about 700 nm.)
All 61 of the tattoos are made of black lines, measuring 0.3 inches to 1.6 inches (0.7 to 4 centimeters) in length and arranged in groups of two, three or four parallel lines, the researchers said. Two of the tattoo groups, one on the right knee and another on the left Achilles tendon, look like plus signs.

The newly discovered tattoo is difficult to see because the mummy's skin has darkened over time, and the tattoos themselves are black.

"We know that they were real tattoos," Zink said. The tattoos' creators "made the incisions into the skin, and then they put in charcoal mixed with some herbs."

The other tattoos are mostly on Ötzi's lower back and on his legs, between the knee and the foot. But it's unclear why Ötzi had these tattoos, and whether they had therapeutic, symbolic or religious significance, the researchers said.

The findings were published Jan. 20 in the Journal of Cultural Heritage.

Seahawks tattoos: Fans show loyalty with permanent ink

SEATTLE (AP) - In 90 minutes, Jason Estep can take off this embarrassing Green Bay Packers bandage. He frowns when he raises his left arm to show a visitor in Lake Forest Park's 522 Tattoo as his tattoo artist Erika Jones, the green-and-yellow clad culprit behind the joke, laughs deviously at her handy work.

Underneath the green and yellow bandage are Estep's true colors: a blue and green Seahawks logo, freshly minted on the inside of his left biceps, still raw from being under Jones' tattoo gun for two hours.

When another jersey isn't enough and you already own everything in the pro shop, a tattoo is just natural, said Estep, who got his first Seahawks tattoo two days before the Hawks punched their ticket to a second straight Super Bowl with an epic comeback over Jones' Packers.

"If you're a fan forever, then you're a fan forever," Estep said. "Why not wear it forever?"

However long local 12s have been Seahawks loyals, the team's rise has many of them giving an arm, leg or torso to show support for their team and their city with permanent ink.

"Whether they're bandwagon fans for a sports team or not, a lot of people take pride in this city in general," said Graydon Payne, a tattoo artist at Queen Anne's Rooster Down Tattoo Gallery, who estimates he's done approximately two dozen Seahawks tattoos in the past year.

After last year's Super Bowl run galvanized a new wave of fans, Seattle-area tattoo shops saw an uptick in Seahawks tattoos, particularly during the weeks leading up the NFC Championship Game last season when the Hawks were viewed as the favorite.

Payne said the fact that fans are choosing tattoos in addition to more traditional forms of support like jerseys or flags goes along with a growing trend in tattoos overall. Since several tattoo-reality shows including 2005's "Miami Ink" and its spinoffs "NY Ink" and "LA Ink," Payne said tattoos have lost some of their rough-around-the-edges connotations, and are more accessible.

522 Tattoo's Jones, who has been practicing her trade in the Seattle area since 2002, said having a team tattoo was nothing out of the ordinary in Wisconsin, where she grew up a Packers fan. At home, it seemed like everyone had one, she said, and a tattoo signaled stronger allegiance than just a jersey.

"It's just more showing whose side you've chosen; it kind of has a primal feeling to it," she said. "This is my team and I will wear it forever."

Back when the Seahawks went to their first Super Bowl in the 2005 season, she saw a spike in Seahawks tattoos, but nothing compares to the current wave.

She said she has done five to six Seahawks tattoos in the past year after doing only one or two previously.

The Seahawks logo, the block No. 12 and the Lombardi Trophy have been the most popular designs among tattoo-seeking 12s in the past year. Local fans often try to incorporate Seattle elements, including the skyline etched into their logo or the Space Needle reflecting off the Lombardi Trophy.

Occasionally though, clients will think even more creatively. Steve Garbe, who has been a fan since he was 3 years old in 1976 - when the Seahawks played their first game in thr NFL - has four pieces currently on his left leg: Mickey Mouse dressed in full Seahawks uniform; the Lombardi Trophy with reflections of the Space Needle and a 12th Man flag wrapped in the blue and green feather-pattern lining seen on the team's jerseys; the current team logo; and a throwback logo.

He also has plans for a full sleeve and ideas to add Roman numerals commemorating the Hawks' Super Bowl win - or wins - with 522 Tattoo's Ben "There" Wallenborn, also a Seahawks fan. Garbe knows he'll be safe from ever having to wear an opposing team's logo on a bandage.

"My guy would never do that to me," Garbe said when Estep raised his arm in the air.

Even with a Packers bandage strapped to his arm, Estep regrets nothing about his fandom (except maybe an ill-fated Lofa Tatupu jersey sitting in his closet). When it comes to his tattoo and his Hawks, it's forever.

"You don't get things on you permanently that you're going to think about later," Estep said. "You want them there. They stay."

Patriots super fan with Tom Brady skull tattoo goes into hiding!

By: Doyle Murphy

Victor Thompson, who has a replica of the star quarterback's helmet inked on his bald head, skipped a Florida court appearance and was still in the wind as New England coach Bill Belichick tried to take the air out of DeflateGate.

Tom Brady’s biggest fan has gone into hiding. Victor Thompson, a New England Patriots fanatic who tattooed the star quarterback’s helmet on his skull, skipped his court appearance on a drug charge and was still in the wind as his favorite player and coach tried to take the air out of “DeflateGate.”

A Florida judge issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for the wild-eyed super fan when he failed to show up for pre-trial hearing, The Smoking Gun reported.

Thompson, a 46-year-old transplant to the Sunshine State from New Hampshire, was allegedly caught in September with a bag of synthetic marijuana called spice when cops stopped him for trespassing at a community center.

The bust produced a series of stunning mug shots showing Thompson’s inked-on headwear from all angles.

The skull tattoo is a detailed replica of Brady’s helmet, including the star athlete's number 12 etched onto the back of his head and even equipment maker Riddell’s logo across his forehead.
Thompson was due in court on Friday and had previously skipped a Jan. 8, court records show.
His life on the lamb coincides with embarrassing days for his idol, who’s struggled to explain why 11 of the footballs the Patriots used during a 45-7 playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts were under inflated.

Brady has insisted he did nothing wrong, and his coach, Bill Belichick, claimed the team “followed every rule to the letter” during a defensive news conference on Saturday.

The same can’t be said for Thompson, who pleaded no contest on Jan. 7 to separate charges of possession of spice and an open container of alcohol.

Ilma Gore’s “Tattoo Me” Project Suspended and Revamped

Ilma Gore, the 22-year-old behind the “Tattoo Me” Kickstarter offering to tattoo  your name on her body for just $10, successfully raised over $11,000 in the few days that her crowd funding project was live, quickly surpassing her set goal of $6,000.  Unfortunately, before the funding time period ended, Kickstarter suspended the project seemingly putting “Tattoo Me” on hold.

However, Gore was quick to act and launched a new “Tattoo Me” through GoFundMe.com.  Now, four days into the project, Gore has raised over $8,500, again surpassing her initial goal.  It looks like a lot of people are eager to have their names tattooed on Gore, whether out of intrigue or for the sake of the art project itself.  If this crowd fund stays active, we will soon get a chance to check out all of the names of the backers helping to make Gore’s project possible.
