A BOXING fan who paid tribute to his sporting hero with an elaborate
tattoo across his back has received praise from the man himself.
Floyd Mayweather JR took to Twitter to show his respect for Dave Sweetman, who endured 50 hours of pain in 11 sittings over the last nine months for the Las Vegas-inspired montage.
The handiwork of 23-year-old Jay Hutton from Abergele went viral on the site, receiving the plaudits of the world champion who shared it with his 4,064,851 followers.
It comes after 33-year-old Dave, from Prestatyn, asked the Nevada star to retweet a picture of the intricate design, which has just been finished in time for his Las Vegas wedding in three weeks.
Mayweather sent direct tweets to Jay (@jaytat2) and Dave (@sweettuff) saying: “I truly appreciate that.”
He then uploaded the picture on his own personal website and Instagram account before tweeting it with the words: “I appreciate all my fans.”
The tattoo has since attracted the attention of rap star Travie McCoy, who tweeted Jay saying: “WOW!!! Most def. need some work from you bruv!! Let’s make it happen!”
Tattooist Jay, who trained in Belgrano and now runs Adrenaline Tattoo Studio in Ellesmere Port, is no stranger to the boxing fraternity having already had his work complimented by heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, along with other celebrities including RnB singer Ne-yo and rap stars The Game and Pitbull.
He said: “It’s great to get recognition from celebs and boxers like Floyd Mayweather. When he uploaded the picture on his Instagram account it received over 30,000 likes – now it’s all over the internet.”He added: “Since opening the studio just over a year ago, it’s going really well and I’m booked up until September. Dave’s tattoo was the most intricate back piece I’ve done yet – I’ve been working on it for months.”
Dave, who is getting ready to marry his fiancee Della Smith later this month, said: “I’ve been to watch fights in Vegas a few times and I’ve always admired Floyd Mayweather. The last time I was over there watching the Ricky Hatton fight, I bumped into him at an after party and when I asked for his autograph, he invited us to join him in the VIP area – it was really surreal but he was a really nice guy.
“I decided to get the tattoo done because I love Vegas and I love boxing and there are lots of details within the piece that mean something to me.
“There is a roulette wheel – the ball is on a number 23, which is the date I get married. The Bellagio Hotel is also there because that’s where me and my fiancee are staying. She loves it.” The tattoo shows Floyd Mayweather with a boxing glove on one hand and his championship belt hanging over his shoulder.
His white Rolls Royce Phantom and the MGM Grand where Mayweather fights is also included, along with a hand of cards showing a royal flush, a dice, and some gambling chips.
